Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) is a women’s NGO founded in 1996 by African women leaders who advocate for the mainstreaming of gender perspectives into peace, security and development in Africa and the empowerment of African women to assume a leadership role in conflict resolution and peace building. FAS has an International Secretariat based in Geneva, Switzerland, a Liaison Office in New York, United States and a Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal.
Internship:
FAS internships are challenging and highly rewarding. Interns should hope to gain practical skills, a greater understanding of the daily running of an international NGO and peace initiatives in Africa, as well as the opportunity to work alongside international organisations and UN agencies.
Please note that Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) internships are for a minimum period of 6 months.
Selected candidates are expected to make their personal arrangement for travel to Dakar, Senegal, board, lodging and other expenses while serving as interns. FAS could be of assistance in helping to locate affordable accommodation.
Purpose of the Position:
The intern will support the projects coordinator in research and day-to-day organization of the office as well as the coordination of various projects within
.
Major duties and responsibilities:
· Assist in the coordination of programme planning and preparation of work; monitor status of programme proposals and receipt of relevant documentation for review and approval. Also, assist FAS in supporting gender mainstreaming regional mechanisms and decision-making processes in Africa;
· Compile, summarize and present basic information on specific programme and related topics or issues. Assist in drafting, editing and translating texts, correspondences, and reports;
· Help design and formulate project methodology of FAS’s activities as well as solidarity missions, training workshops and other capacity building measures particularly in Casamance, the Mano River and the Great Lakes region;
· Help put into action strategies for establishing and maintaining partnerships with local and international partners and networks;
· Assist in the development and preparation of project proposals, grant submissions and other fundraising activities;
· Help review project document on cost plans and compliance with relevant rules and procedures, distribute project documents to relevant FAS offices upon approval;
· Help in budget revision;
· Handle electronic information storage and management systems and databases;
· Serve as focal point for administrative coordination of programme implementation activities; obtain necessary approvals from PO or the concerned authority, process and follow-up on FAS’ administrative actions;
· Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies required:
To be considered for an internship at FAS, applicants must meet the following requirements:
· Be a graduate or post-graduate student in a field related to international or social development, conflict resolution, communications, knowledge management or related fields;
· Be bilingual (English, French) or proficient in at least one of the languages (English at least) ;
· Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records;
· Have a high sense of responsibility;
· Knowledge of, and appreciation for, issues related to gender and conflict;
· Experience of working as a team, preferably in an international environment;
· Evidence of strategic thinking and proven ability to organize, plan and prioritize work;
· Be able to work under pressure;
· Sense of retained and confidentiality.
Additional assignment-specific qualifications:
Substantive research, analysis and information synthesis on gender, peace and development issues, such as violence against women, refugees and small arms;
Documenting and disseminating comprehensive studies on women’s best practices to muster political support and to influence policy, legislation and programme development;
· Writing, editing, designing and producing analytical reports, articles and other publications documenting FAS’ activities on gender, peace and development issues;
· Quantitative analytical skills and excel proficiency are essential.

Timing:
Time period of assignment: June to December 2014 with a possibility of extension.
Conditions to be respected during the contracting period:
· The intern must bring in a laptop in order to endure work;
· The intern will be liable to provide their own transportation to and from work;
· The intern is subject to stay longer than working hours.
